A group study of 472 sellers found something worth sitting with. Elite performers close 75 percent of the proposals they send. The top 20 percent close 62 percent. Everyone else averages 40 percent.

That’s a 35-point spread between elite and average sellers, working from the exact same starting pipeline. Same leads. Same market. Same proposal stage. Wildly different outcomes.

Whenever a gap that large shows up in real data, it usually means the difference isn’t talent or luck. It’s a small number of specific things elite performers do that everyone else mostly skips.

What Elite Performers Actually Do Differently

Three things separate the top of that gap from the rest, and none of them require a bigger team or a better product.

Discovery comes before anything else. Elite performers never present or pitch cold. They map the prospect’s actual pain first, so what gets presented later is built around what the prospect already told them matters, not a generic version of the pitch.

The deal is multi-threaded, not single-threaded. Deals tied to one contact at the company die at a dramatically higher rate than deals with two or three stakeholders involved. If the champion goes quiet or changes roles, a single-threaded deal usually goes quiet with them.

The process stays owned, not passive. Elite performers keep control of what happens next at every stage, instead of sending a proposal and waiting to hear back. Momentum that isn’t actively managed tends to fade well before a prospect ever says no.

Simpler Beats Longer

Companies with a genuinely formal sales process see 28 percent higher revenue growth than those without one. But formal doesn’t mean complicated. One documented case saw close rate actually drop from 28 percent to 19 percent after the process expanded from three steps to six. More stages meant more places for a deal to quietly stall.

The pattern across all of this points the same direction. A process worth having is tight, deliberate, and repeatable, not long. Discovery first, multiple stakeholders engaged, ownership held through every stage, and nothing extra bolted on just because it feels thorough.

Where This Goes Next

None of this requires a sales background most MSP owners don’t have time to build right now. It requires the process itself being run deliberately, the same way service delivery already is.

That’s exactly the process we run for MSPs, discovery-led, multi-threaded, fully owned from first conversation through signed contract. We don’t just borrow what elite performers do differently. We take it further, since the same team stays accountable for the deal long after the proposal goes out.

Real people. Real meetings. Real clients.
